Hello,

I just got a rather old 12ft sear fiberglass boat and trailor from my father (it is ~25 years old)...

The boat is in ok condition (trailor as well), but am having an awful time getting the trailor's lights to work properly...

New hitch (uHaul - verified with their trailor that lights work)...

New set of lights and wires....

The trailor is somewhat rusty in some spots, but we sanded down contacts between the light brackets and the trailor, drilled a new ground hole, ran separate ground wires fron the rusted metal brackets holdin the new lights to the trailor...

Problem:

Blinkers in trailor act like 'hazards' (i.e., no matter what blinker your turn on, both lights on the back of the trailor blink)

When you turn the headlights of the car on, the lights GO OUT!

We've checked and rechecked everythint we possibly can!

the wires for the trailor are the

1 white (ground)
2 brown
1 yellow
1 green

each light has a brown and the proper color (either yellow or green)...

can any one help?

This sounds like one of the wires is grounding out. Did you replace all the wiring running through the trailer? It is possible that somewhere in the frame, especially if it is old wiring, that there is a crack or cut in the wire, that has grounded to the trailer. Also, make sure all the voltages are coming out properly from the vehicle's pig tail. Place the negative lead of a volt meter on the ground, then turn the lights, signal, etc. while touching the positive lead to the appropriate spot on the pig tail connector.

Hope some of this works. I've done a lot of this sort of stuff, and some of these are a bear to track down.

Best of fishing,
Dan

I had the same problem and I connected the 2 brown wires from the trailer lights with the brown wire from the vehicle pig tail and solved the problem.

Check your truck pigtail to make sure it is working properly. I had the same problem with my lights and I had just put new wiring in my trailor. I finally found that it was my truck pigtail.

Not all trailor wire kits work with U-Haul harnesses! I had to rip mine out and install a new harness. Also it's easier just to install new wiring on the trailor. Saves alot of headaches. Carl
