Spinning Rig
I wanted to add a spinning rod and reel combo to my collection. Is it worth it, what are these combos typically used for? Sorry if my questions are a little uneducated I am just a beginner.

Rich

Rich,
Any question is a good question. Especially when you are trying to learn. That is why the pro staff is here.
Yes, I would add a spinning rig to your arsenal. They are used for several things, depending on the angler. In my case I use them for when I'm casting light weight finesse type tackle. The main item are 1/16 to 1/8 ounce lead heads with small grubs or 4-inch worms. I'll also use it for split shot fishing, and light weight jigs.
Some anglers like them for skipping tubes and worms under trees and docks.
I would recommend a 6'2" to 6"6" medium action rod, with a matching reel, such as a Mitchell 300X.
Hope this helps answer your question.
Any other questions just fire away. We are here to answer.
Best of fishing,
Dan

I also carry a spinning outfit, use it for small baits, skipping, and fishing drop shots. I use a lite action, 6'6". I'll also use it in open water where I don't need the winching power of a bait caster. The way my year has gone I might as well be using a caine poll. By the way Dan, congrats on your awards. Wish I could get some of these shows.

Rich a spinning combo is always handy to have in the boat. Like mentioned above they are good for skipping up under docks and brush.
If you go to Wal-Mart and look at the rods they carry you will find a Berkley Cherrywood spinning rod in 6'6" and 7' models. They are very afforable at less than $20 and very sensative. Get you a nice reel to go with and you dont have alot invested in case you don't like it.

Rich, I do all my jig and soft plastics fishing with a 300 Mitchell and matching rod of 6'. It's great for flippin' and pitchin' in tight quarters. Most brands have an interchangable reel handle to suit left or right hand anglers. I left mine on the left side, just seems more natural that way and I tuck the handle of the rod under my forearm for more leverage when pulling a bgrute out of cover. They take some getting used to, but defineately a plus. I think the rear drag on some reels is a great idea, when line is being stripped off the face of the reel, it's difficult to tighten or loosen the front drag. Good luck, keep those questions coming. Rich,
I use 7'0" Pflueger Trion spinning rods with the Pflueger President spinning reels. They are very well balanced and top of the line equipment.
Usually I use my spinning gear for throwing finesse baits like 3" and 4" Senkos. I also use this gear for fishing Drop Shot rigs.
As was mentioned earlier, spinning tackle is excellent for skipping under docks and low hanging trees.
