Spinnerbaits in Heavy Cover
First off, I would like to say great site. I looked threw alot of the forums and articles and you guys are really doing a great job. I have a question about spinnerbaits. I am in college up in Syracuse, and dont bring my car upstate, so most of my fishing is done on Long Island during the summer. Most of the lakes I fish are shallow and choked by weeds (really dense coontail). I would like to fish more spinnerbaits next season. What size spinnerbait and blade combo would you suggest? Thanks.

KVD, I hope with those initials-you're not Kevin Van Dam asking for help-LOL.
In any shallow weedy lake, I prefer a 1/4 ounce tandem spin spinnerbait with a long arm. The blade arms helps fend off some of the weeds and moss. I don't use a plastic trailer, just the skirt and definately no trailer hook. As for color, it's either a shad pattern skirt( salt & pepper) with silver blades for clear water, or a chartreuse/blue skirt with two gold blades for dingy water. If other anglers tend to use this same set-up, you might want to try a black skirt with silver blades in either water color. If you see shad or fry minnows skimming the surface, don't be afraid to wake a spinnerbait right across the surface. Good luck and glad you enjoy Bassin USA. Johnnie

LOL, the real KVD I think has this spinnerbait stuff more than figured out lol. I see that your from Iowa, I lived awhile in Omaha, NE and have family in the Carroll, IA area, I love it out there. Thanks for the welcome and suggestion. As regards to painted blades, what are ideal conditions to use these? Thanks for your help.

KVD,
I'm also from Long Island and I fish all over New York State and the Northeast. There is one particular spinnerbait that constantly works well for me and a lot of the guys I fish with:
3/8 & 1/2 ounce Stanley Platinum wedge, Tandem (Willow "Gold", Colorado "Silver") in Chartreuse and White.
This bait really works well on the Island and update NY. They come out of the package with a #6 Gold Willow, which we have all been replacing with a #4 gold XPS Willow. Comes through the weeds great and the blade combination really seems to make the difference. I would recommend added a few into your collection.

Brenden thanks for the info, I will be investing in these and checking them out. Its funny that you recommend that. One of the biggest bass I have ever seen in person was caught by my friend on a Stanley Platinum double willow, in a lake on Long Island. The pic is below with the spinner bait still in the fishes mouth. Thanks for the info

Good info, esp. for me, the very worst spinnerbait fishermen alive. I have exactly caught two fish, one of which threw the hook. Last spring I went out with an older gentleman in his 70's who makes his own in the off season. I studied him like I'd study for a class in collage. He was in front of the boat and had caught maybe 10 to my none. At one point he turned around and grinned at me saying,"bet you think it's because I'm upfront". I said the thought had crossed my mind, and we switched. He gave me his rod and we continued to fish for a few more hours. He probably caught 25 fish to my none. I've heard it said that spinnerbaits are dumb baits that anyone can fish. I must be the dumbest of the dumb. :p Good fishing all. Carl

That fish was caught at the Massapequa Res. It was caught at the South End of the lake, at the spot closest to Sunrise Highway. I dont like fishing at that particular spot because it gets alot of pressure, but it seemed to work out that day. I was doing alot of reading on these baits and the versatility (i.e. jerking, yo-yo, killing it, burning it, ect.), and many others ways instead of just straight reeling it. It seems like these baits are extremely adaptable to many conditions and different structure. I really look forward to getting to know how to fish this bait.
