No, this is not a promo for Humminbird, though I am on the pro staff. I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried the new Smart Cast Piranha portable depth finder. It's designed for dock and bank anglers, but I've found many uses for it in the boat. If I need to decide whether to blast through a shallow area or idle trhough, I simply cast the Smart bobber in the area toi check the depth, same thing going under a small bridge over a creek channel. In cast the Smart bobber anywhere I'm not sure of. Really saves a lot of time and trouble by trying to idle through areas and getting stuck in the mud, or crashing into submerged rocks just below the surface. They sell like hot cakes here on the Mississippi river where we deal more in inches of water than feet. Hope you all get a chance to use one. Johnnie

I’ve been looking at the Smart Cast with interest, there are a number of situations I feel they would be extremely useful.

Case in point, early in the year one of the spots I hit hard is far up a creek channel. You can’t always reach it from the lake due to shallow water at the mouth, but when conditions are right it’s a gold mine.

But, it’s narrow and shallow in places, with cut banks, the fish seem to find the deeper spots, about 3 to 5 ft, and they all position the same on a given day. If I could find a way to search out the right structure from a distance I believe my catch would increase greatly. For a long time I used a sidefinder sonar, but it went belly up and I can’t find any units like it anymore.

Also, those wonderful flood control lakes, ponds without boat access, strip pits and especially boat docks.
