open water techniques

Questions guys. How do you fish open, deep water, between 15' and 40', with the fish holding in 10 to 15' of water? According to my LCD the thermocline is about 15'. Why do I mark baitfish below that? I've always thought that there wasn't enough O2 below the line for fish? And no Brandon, I'm not talking about in-shore fishing, but maybe... I've been catching some nice fish in the last 3 weeks. Hope every one else is having the same. Carl

Carl, those fish seem prime for deep diving crankbaits. Ten to fifteen feet is perfect even if they are suspended. A Clown colored Suspending Rogue might be ideal. Run it down deep then jerk it and suspend, jerk and stop. Wood cranks seem to work best for suspended fish-no rattle. A swimming jig and four inch twister tail might also get R done.
As for the bait fish, that's not too uncommon. Bait fish require a lot less oxygen and can easily yo-yo up and down through the depths with comfort. They seem to know they are much safer below the bass than over them. Those suspended bass are most likely relating to not only the thermocline, but possibly to barometeric pressure as well. The baromater doesn't affect bait fish much. Good luck, keep on catchin' em, Johnnie

Once again thanks much Johnnie. Was thinking about ways to work those large coves where the bass are during these dog days. Everyone else was pounding the banks, as were we,and some boats did very well, just think that some open water fishing might put a few bucks in the bank. Hope all is well, Carl.

Suspended Bass, ugh! Unless, they’re holding on the ‘cline to ambush bait as they travel vertically.

Jonnie’s right about deep cranks, wood, suspending. NO RATTLE!

I have a few modified old Poes 900 series in 090 color pattern, a black and white bait that is perfect for this pattern. (I’ll go swimming for them if they get hung up, they’re that precious to me, that color and series was discontinued about 13 years ago, I bought six dozen.).

Also, a plano box full of plain grubs and jigs heads for back-up.

One small factiod, find a hump, mid-lake, that is exactly the same depth on top as the suspended fish. Work it over hard, and I mean cast to it from every angle you can. Use any baits that will work at that depth, leaning heavily to suspending baits and carolina rigs with whatever plastic works best locally. I prefer Power Bait 11 inch, red shad here on Eufaula
