I have a rod designed for up to 1/8 ounce lures. Will it hurt the rod if I use up to a 1/4 ounce lure on it? If so then how far above the listed limit can you go or should you exceed it at all?

well i have never realy worried about the weight limit ive used lure way over it and it worked just fine

You can use that rod, which sounds like an ultralite, with a somewhat heavier lure. You might need a slightly heavier line, and your casts have to be "soft". They can be alot of fun; I went out with a buddy this summer fishing for white fish, they weren't there but cats were. Had some breakoffs but landed 4.5 cat with 4 or 5 lbs test. In all we landed 18 cats. As for bass fishing you should up grade with a stronger rod and heavier line. You don't need to spend a fortune, 50 bucks can put you in the game. On the way to a tourny I broke 12" off the end of one of my favorite rod. Stopped at WallMart and picked up a rod for 18 bucks. I still use to this day. Good Luck. Carl

Rookie, using a heavier bait on your rod probably won't hurt the rod, but it will hurt your presentations. A six foot medium heavy rod is my recommendation-one piece, I hate two piece rods, lose too much feel and they often come apart at the worst time.

Thanks guys. My problem is I have a good Garcia 6' baitcaster (LT - Med, one piece) but I am trying to get a better spinning rod. The one I have now is 7' and medium action. It's good for salmon but lacks the sensitivity for bass. I tried a 5'6" ultra light spinning rod but I get the impression that is too small. We have 3 - 10lb bass around here.

I like a 6'6" rod. I agree with Johnnie on that. I have a light action spinn. that I use for small baits, and drop shotting. From what you say you sound like you're pretty much set. I use the aformentioned spinning rod,baitcasters med. heavey for jigs, worms. Medium for crankbaits. Good luck.
