In the end of may i will be taking a trip up to the boundry waters in northern minnesota. the lakes we're fishing are canoe only, and you need to portage a bit to get there. i will be VERY limited in the gear i can take, do to the weight of it on these portages. If you were fishing spring smallies 30miles south of canada(i.e water still cold) what would you bring? can i expect them to be chasing anything, or am i stuck with the leech and slip bobber again? Thanks Guys, hope the spring fishing is going well!

Nick, for a trip like that I would want to include a 1/8th ounce brown hair jig and a #101 Uncle Josh pork frog-brown. Smallmouth love crawfish and this baits works well. Also, some small in-line spinners-Mepps-Rooster Tail etc in silver or white with a silver blade. Both these baits can be fished in deep or shallow water. The leech and bobber will take fish, but it's just not the same as out-smarting an old bronzeback! Have fun and I hope you nail a whopper. Johnnie

I go up there every year. You only need a couple of items. bull frog colored zara spooks and 4 inch black/chartruse slider worms. If you do not know how to work a spook I highly suggest you learn it between now and then because they just crush it. Take several in case pike get a few.

I hate to honk my own horn but using a BulletBobber can be more effective then a slip bobber.
www.bulletbobber.com and it can be used as a slip bobber. It just dosn't take full advantage of the directional control but any control is better then none.

My suggestion is to take tubes and slider worms. They both can be fished on jig heads and the tubes can fished deep vertical jigging. Good luck it its great up there.
