Baitcaster vs Spinning Rod

Post by RookieBassMan »

When are baitcasters the rod of choice over a spinning rod? Are they good for crankbaits and top water baits or is the spinning rod more suited for that? I would also appreciate it someone who has used these new chatter baits would let me know how they worked and what type of retrieve they seem to work best on. I bought one recently but have had no luck with it so far.

Thanks in advance.

Baitcaster vs Spinning Rod

Post by johnnie crain outdoors »

Rookie, I use baitcasting as well as spinning gear. I think most of us do. I don't like spinning gear for crankbaits. The wobbling action provided by the revolving reel spool distracts from my feel of the crankbait. I do prefer spinning tackle for jigs, worms and any finesse fishing. For topwaters I like bait casting, I feel I have more control over the baits action.
Chatterbait? I use a Bayou Outdoors Lightning Blade which is the exact same thing and my best results have been fishing it fairly fast just under the surface much like a shallow diving crankbait. Fish really slam this lure as it swims along. Don't try to impart any added action to the bait unless it would be to simply stop the bait and allow it to freefall briefly. The lure is at its best when swimming. Hope this helps and good luck. Johnnie
