What would you do?
55 is the temp, stained water and rocky. sounds like smallie water to me! but let's say both are present. for smallies i go with a jerkbait, luckycraft pointer series or a spinnerbait both in a bright color! and just for fun i would use a small(but fat) crankbait with a wide wobble.and for the largmouth spinnerbait w/colorado blads in white, also a floating worm 6-7in white or bubblegum txrigged no wieght. reason for my tackle is the water is stained and the fish can see my baits better with the bright colors. and they can zone in better with the sound and vibration that they make. oh, and just for fun i would try a luckycraft sammy topwater plug.

I have had great success using a 1-Minus in chart for stained water. I used a 4-Minus this year and had good success also. This seems to work well on the days they don't take a spinnerbait. These two lures are tied on every trip I make in the spring.

Fat Crankbaits ... What colors? White? Fire Tiger? Chartruese? My dad was a huge crankbait fisherman in Sacramento where I grew up. He always threw cranks. He also used a little lure called a beetle spin. Black body w/yellow stripes. I remember watching him hammer those fish. Maybe I should go out and buy some ... what do you think guys? Beetle Spin?

Beetle spins are rocking baits for early season bass. I actually forgot all about them. I do use them but in cold water situations. I'm talking 45 degrees or so. There was a great article in the Winter of 2000 or 2001 in Bassmaster about a guy who bank fishes for smallies with this bait in the winter. He kills the big fish with it.

If the water temp. is on the colder side I would go with the pig and jig. I use a black and blue terminator jig with a uncle josh frog trailer in the black color. The reason I go with the pork trailer insted of a plastic trailer in cold water is because the plastic trailers seen to stiffen up. The pork trailer with stay life like

My first selection would be a Magnum Wiggle Wart crankbait in spring crawfish color( mostly green/orange).The Mag Wart offers a . slow moving target works in shallowwater, fished slowly, makes alot of noise with its rattle chamber, looks and acts like a crawfish, will take a beating on rock cover and still remain usable. Cast it right against the shallow rocks along the shoreline or parallel cast it along the rocks about a rod length from shore.

One of my choices would be a red rattle trap. you have the rattles to draw them in

If the water temp is around 60 degrees, I will usually start off with a rattle trap. If no takers, then I will slow down with a carolina rigged lizzard (green pumpkin for stained water). I always fish a white fluke bait in stained and clear water with great success.
